PRESS RELEASE
Starbucks’ eco-friendly mission reinforced by #GroundsForYourGarden
encouraging customers to enrich soil with coffee grounds
Bangkok, 20 April 2022 – To commemorate Earth Day, Starbucks Thailand is enhancing its eco-friendly mission with the #GroundsForYourGarden activity, in which customers are invited to take home coffee grounds to enrich their soil for growing plants at home or in the office. Starting today, the grounds are available for free at all Starbucks stores nationwide.
Nednapa Srisamai, Managing Director of Starbucks Thailand, said: “Starbucks Thailand is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of people and the environment through our business, with a focus on environmental and sustainability activities and projects. Starbucks would like to invite our customers to take coffee grounds back from our stores to add to their compost for planting to bring more greenery to our planet on Earth Day this year. We truly hope that the #GroundsForYourGarden activity is a positive contribution to the world.”
#GroundsForYourGarden is a daily activity in which Starbucks’ partners are dedicated to connecting all customers to the Starbucks Experience while also helping save the environment. After providing quality beverages to customers on a daily basis, a lot of the coffee grounds can be reused. Starbucks Thailand has previously used them to manufacture in-store tables and trays, as well as coasters as seasonal products. Furthermore, coffee grounds contain important components for planting. As a result, Starbucks invites all customers to grow plants and contribute to the greening of our planet.
Do you know how coffee grounds benefit plants?
- Coffee grounds help plant growth because they are high in nitrogen, which is a key nutrient source for plants, as well as potassium and phosphorus.
- Coffee grounds help soil retain water, allowing plants to maintain their continuous growth cycle and preventing weeds and snails. By sprinkling coffee grounds on top of the soil, you can keep animals away from the plants.
- Coffee grounds are acidic, which helps improve soil quality for plants that thrive in acidic soil, such as blueberries, carrots, cabbage, radishes, and small plants like cacti, succulents, and flowers like roses, azaleas, lilies, hydrangeas, and holly.
How to use coffee grounds for planting?
After taking the Starbucks coffee grounds home, dry them (on newspaper) until no moisture remains. Customers can use them to mix soil in three different ways:
- Coffee grounds + soil: Mix coffee grounds with a good portion of soil or a bit of grass to adjust the pH of the soil for plants that thrive in acidic soil
- Coffee grounds + compost: Mix coffee grounds with a maximum of 25% compost to improve compost quality, as coffee grounds have a 20:1 carbon-nitrogen ratio (C:N ratio)
- Coffee grounds + dry leaves: Mix coffee grounds with dry leaves to feed soil worms, which are plant-friendly and will naturally stimulate plant growth
